Vector Quantization (VQ) for speech coding is an advanced technique with great practical value. In this paper a simple description of the VQ's principles is presented. Next，VQ for speech waveform coding，speech parameters coding and their mixed form coding are described respectively. Then，an overview of them during the past few years and the prediction of their developing tendency are presented.
