This paper describes the study of monitoring methods suitable for condition monitoring of gear-reducer of shipboard steam-turbine. At first monitoring methods and feature extracting techniques are analyzed. A generic monitoring flaw is presented. Then，some relevant issues such as evaluation of monitoring methods，criterion of monitoring feature selection and strategy of decision-making，are discusscd. Finally，a brief application is demonstrated.
